Greetings, Braddock Eagle Family Members!

We hope this message finds you and your family well. As you know, Braddock Elementary School is a Two-Way Spanish Immersion School with 438 students out of 866 K-5 students participating in this program. We are proud of our diverse student body, and we are committed to celebrating the rich culture and heritage of our Hispanic students and families.

Thank you for joining us for our National Hispanic Month celebration on Thursday, September 21st. We were honored to have 11 talented student performers from Valle Verde Marimba School in Guatemala to perform for our students, staff, and families.

The musicians put on a magnificent show and it was truly a joy to see our Braddock family come together to celebrate Hispanic culture. We were especially grateful for the support of our Spanish-speaking families, who represent a total of 649/866 K-5 students or 75% of our Braddock student population.

We are excited to celebrate our heritage all year long, but especially during Hispanic Heritage Month. If you have something special you would like to share, please contact your child's teacher or one of the Assistant Principals.

Sincerely,

The Braddock Elementary School Staff

Walk, Bike & Roll Attendance/Absenteeism  Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
  • Attending school every day, even during the end of the school year, is critical to students reaching their fullest potential.
  • Regular attendance helps students engage in learning that builds proficiency in reading and math, which will help them to graduate from high school.
  • Students who attend school regularly do better academically in middle school. They are also more likely to graduate on time from high school, if they miss less than a week of school each semester.
  • A Caring Culture that creates a sense of belonging is a key component for students to attend school regularly.
  • Being in school helps students to get to know peers, teachers, and school staff, and to create trusting relationships that motivate students to participate in learning.
  • Students and their families should reach out to a trusted adult at the school—a teacher, counselor, school social worker or administrator—if they are having a hard time attending school every day.
  • Schools help students and families gain access to basic resources such as meals,  physical and mental health services, and fun enrichment activities including sports, clubs, music, afterschool, and summer programs.
  • Daily attendance routines, created at home or in school, can reduce stress for students and families, and create a sense of safety and security, especially after chaotic transitions.

Greetings, Braddock Eagle Family Members!

We hope this message finds you and your family well. As you know, Braddock Elementary School had its annual Back-To-School Night (BTSN) event on Tuesday, September 12th and Thursday, September 14th. Our grade level teams shared “A Day in the Life” explaining your child’s daily schedule and what each area of the day looks like and sounds like (i.e., Morning Meeting, Specials, Lunch, Recess, Math, Literacy, etc.). Families were then escorted to their child’s classroom where they got to speak personally with the classroom teacher.

Thank you to all who attended. If you were not able to attend and would like information, please contact your child’s teacher. We are excited to have a wonderful school year together!

Sincerely,

The Braddock Elementary School Staff

Walk, Bike & Roll Bilingualism Virtual Event

Want to learn why its important to be bilingual?

Date: September 20th

Time: 1:00 p.m.

Link to Register

Bilingualism is the norm, not the exception. In recent years, the research on bilingualism has revealed exciting new findings about how people grow up and live with two or more languages in different contexts. But are all bilinguals the same? Contrary to the view that bilinguals are two monolinguals in one person, the emerging evidence shows that bilinguals differ by virtue of where they live and how they use their languages. In this talk, I discuss recent discoveries about bilingualism and its influences on the brain, mind, and behavior.

Anne L. Beatty-Martínez, lecturer at the University of California, San Diego, specialises in the language science of bilingualism. Her research has two intertwined strands: one that examines how cognition supports language use and another that asks how language use impacts cognition itself. In her work, she capitalizes on the diversity and variability in people’s experiences to better understand how the brain adapts to the demands of more than one language

Attendance/Absenteeism

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

🤧 Tips to Stay Healthy

Flu season is quickly approaching and communicable diseases continue to be present in our schools. Families and staff are encouraged to follow the health practices below to prevent the spread of illnesses and help keep our schools safe:

  • Make an appointment to get a flu vaccine as soon as possible. Everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine (with rare exceptions). Flu vaccines are widely available at doctors’ and pediatricians’ offices, grocery stores, and pharmacies.
  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19 if you have not done so already. As of Tuesday, September 12, updated COVID-19 vaccines are approved for use among those aged 6 months or older for the 2023-24 season. Find out where you can get a COVID-19 vaccine or booster in your community by visiting Vaccinate Virginia, or calling 877-VAX-IN-VA or 877-829-4682. Note: Flu vaccines and COVID vaccines can be provided in the same appointment.
  • Check with your student’s healthcare provider to make sure they are up to date on their required school entrance immunizations. Immunization records can now be updated in SIS ParentVUE through the Online Verification Update form.
  • Check for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. If a child is sick, please keep them home and get them tested for COVID-19 to stop further spread from occurring. Additional guidance on when to keep your child home due to symptoms and illness is available on the FCPS Attendance webpage. FCPS employees are also advised to stay home and get tested when feeling sick.
  • Don’t forget to wash hands regularly, avoid touching the face with unwashed hands, cover the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and limit the time children spend in large group settings with contagious individuals whenever possible.

The most up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 school health practices is available on the Health and Safety Guidance webpage.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe and healthy.

Greetings, Braddock Eagle Family Members!

We are very excited to share that this week was a very special week for our School Community!  For eight years, Braddock Elementary has had a beautiful partnership with Task Tarea https://task-tarea.org/.  Task-Tarea is an organization of Guatemalan born citizens who moved to the United States and wanted to continue to support the people by supporting Mayan village schools. Some of those founding members live in Fairfax and Loudon Counties. These members raise funds and send them to Guatemalan Mayan families to provide the opportunity for girls to attend school instead of working on family farms.  Task-Tarea has been very successful with their efforts and wanted to connect their schools to schools in the United States and in the State of Virginia.

In 2016, Braddock Elementary was contacted by Task-Tarea and asked to join a "Skype In the Classroom" program.  Students in both schools would meet virtually to discuss what they were learning in Science and share information about their environment, habitats, and wildlife.  In 2018, some of our staff members traveled to Task-Tarea to meet some of the members of the Mayan Schools they "Skyped" with and learn more about Guatemala.  Since that time, the Task-Tarea partnership has continued to flourish and in 2019, Task-Tarea visited Braddock Elementary and brought along a special guest who was a recipient of their grants to attend school and later attended college to become a teacher. This school year, Task-Tarea returned to Braddock Elementary this week to present a very special gift!  Two Guatemalan Spray Paint Mural Artists created two beautiful murals in our newly renovated building.  One mural will highlight our school partnership and the other will highlight habitats.  Habitats were the topic our students discussed the most during the "Skype" sessions.  You may contact Joyce Matthews, ([email protected]), XSTREAM Programs Coordinator if you have questions about the visit of our Task Tarea guests.

If you have connections or partnerships with organizations who are willing to contribute (i.e., paint a mural, build a project, or anything else that you can think of), please let us know. Call us at 703-914-7300, we would love to have as many countries and their cultures represented in/on our Braddock Campus. -- Sincerely, Principal, K. Jackson-Muir

Sincerely,

The Braddock Elementary School Staff

Immunization Reminder

🩹 The Importance of Up-to-Date Immunizations

Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. While COVID-19 vaccinations are not required, many other immunizations are. Check with your students’ healthcare providers now to make sure they are up to date on their immunizations. Immunization records can now be updated online in SIS ParentVUE through the Online Verification Update form. To access that form, click Online Packets in the top right of the screen after logging in to SIS ParentVUE. Caregivers can obtain an activation key letter to activate their SIS ParentVUE account by contacting the main office at 703-914-7300.

Statewide Outbreak of Meningococcal

One of the required immunizations for students entering 7th and 12th grade is the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). The Virginia Department of Health is currently tracking a statewide outbreak of meningococcal disease. MenACWY can provide protection against the bacteria responsible for this outbreak.

Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of immunization clinics or contact your family’s healthcare provider. Appointments are required for most clinics.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. Get more information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation

COVID Guidance

😷 2023-24 Health and Safety Guidance for Schools

Although the COVID-19 hospital transmission level (previously the COVID-19 Community Transmission level) for Fairfax County is currently low, COVID-19 cases have risen in Virginia during the last few weeks, and flu season will soon be upon us. Be sure to review FCPS Health and Safety Guidance for the best ways to prevent the spread of disease and to find out when students should stay home from school.

STEAMOLOGY

🧪 STEAMOLOGY STEM Fest Offers Hands-On Activities for Students

Students are invited to participate in STEM FEST on Saturday, October 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South County High School. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade can participate in robotics demonstrations, coding experiments, and more. High school students are invited to volunteer. Visit the STEAMOLOGY website for more information.

Attendance/Absenteeism

Students Are Learning Every Day

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during long breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

Attendance

🙋 Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Watch this video with tips from Fairfax Pyramid principals and visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

2023 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. In late June, the School Board approved changes to the SR&R for the 2023-24 school year. Updates include a revision of dress code expectations, bystander expectations for students witnessing harmful or unsafe behaviors, bullying, and substance abuse responses. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Friday, September 29.

Lightspeed

🔍 Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Safety Drills

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

Braddock Family,

We are excited to welcome your child to the first day of school! We know that this can be a big day for both children and parents, so we want to make sure that you have all the information you need to make it a smooth transition.

School arrival is between 8:30 AM and 8:45 AM

  • Kindergarten students will meet their teacher in the cafeteria (enter through door #3)
  • 1st Grade students will meet their teacher on the grassy area/black top near the gym (door #4)
  • 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students will meet their teacher on the basketball court blacktop.

Here are a few things to keep in mind on the first day of school:

  • Be sure to arrive early. The first day of school can be chaotic, so it's important to give yourself plenty of time to get to school to drop off your child.
  • Talk to your child and prepare them by practicing their morning school routine.
  • FREE Breakfast and Lunch will be provided for you child if they choose.
  • Send your child to school with a positive attitude. Remind them that school is a safe place. The first day of school can be a little bit scary, but it's important for your child to start the year off on the right foot.
  • Help your child practice saying their full name (first and last) this will help school staff ensure they are in the correct classroom. If that is difficult for them, or they are shy, please make sure their backpack is labeled with their full name.

We know that you are your child's first and most important teacher, so we thank you in advance for your support as we work together to help your child succeed in school.

If you were unable to make it to our morning Open House, we hope you will join us this afternoon from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. at our afternoon session.

Here are few highlights from this morning:

Sincerely,

The Braddock Elementary School Staff

Update Contact Information to Receive Messages From FCPS

Be among the first to know about weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from FCPS and our school by providing your cell phone number and email in SIS ParentVUE. Make sure you complete the Emergency Care Form for your child every year and update when necessary.

To update your contact information in ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then select the “Online Verification/Update” form in the drop down menu. Click “Begin Packet.”

Parents who do not have a SIS ParentVUE account continue to have the option to communicate updates via the normal paper process. They can also print and complete a blank Emergency Care Information Form needed for updates and submit it to the front office.

Schoology

What Is Schoology?

Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized and it keeps the class connected.

A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

Parent accounts will be available after August 21. To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE account. More information on how to login and use Schoology is available online.

Annual Notice of Opt-Out Information

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available — a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2023-24 Opt-Out Booklets.
