VEXIQ Robotics

Students in grades 3 -5 sign up to participate in the afterschool activity where they learn how to design, build and program a VEXIQ Robot. The club meets once a week for one hour and thirty minutes. Students have the opportunity to continue their learning about robots during the summer program. Students also participate in Robotics presentations, conferences and competition. Students are able to continue their work with VEX Robotics in Middle School and High School.

KAST: Kids Are Scientists Too (w/Thomas Jefferson HS)

Students in grades 4 and 5 sign up to work with KAST Club members from Thomas Jefferson High School twice a month. The students work together to explore Science concepts of Sir Isaac Newton. This is a great activity to prepare students for the Fifth Grade Virginia Science Standards of Learning Test in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.

CODING: Computer Science

Kick off for learning about Computer Science STARTS every year in December! All students at Braddock Elementary learn about CODING/Computer Science and continue to explore all of the possibilities with the CODE.ORG website. Students in Grades 2 – 4 also participate in the CODING Café from November to January each year. All classroom Computer Centers have links to CODING activities for students to explore during independent work time.

GEMS: Girls Exploring Engineering, Mathematics, and Science

Students participating in Robotics & Coding are selected to participate in numerous activities throughout the school year to encourage them to consider Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as a future career. There are several organizations such as Women In Technology, Robotics Education Competition Foundation, Girls Code, Girls In Technology, The Pearl Project and NOVA Systemic Solutions provide activities and events to encourage and support students to explore STEM fields.

Maker Space

Students in all grades will have the opportunity to participate in Maker Space activities when they visit the library.  Maker Space provides the opportunity for students to share creative projects and construct projects that they have designed.  This activity provides students a space to build, construct, design, and display their work!

School Safety Patrols

The School Safety Patrol program provides an opportunity for 4^th and 5^th grade students learn the importance of leadership. The Safety Patrol position is considered “first job” experience. Students are “Safety Observers” who report an unsafe activity in and around the school building. The Safety Patrols also deliver breakfast to classrooms each morning and learn the importance of responsibility and being on time!

Chess Club

Students are learning strategies that will be very helpful with Mathematics equations.  Chess is a great activity for children of ALL ages!

Technology Ambassadors

Students in grades 3-5 learn digital citizenship skills while supporting staff and students with technology. This afterschool club meets weekly and uses a variety of approved digital resources to teach others responsible technology use. Students create tutorials on how to use different online resources to support learning.
